Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty which extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits state parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, based on the scientific consensus that (part one) global warming is occurring and (part two) it is extremely likely that human-made CO 2 emissions have predominantly caused it. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto , Japan on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005. There are currently 192 parties ( Canada withdrew effective December 2012) [4] to the Protocol.

There are currently 192 Parties (Canada withdrew effective December 2012) [4] to the Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol implemented the objective of the UNFCCC to fight global warming by reducing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to 'a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system' (Art. 2). The Protocol is based on the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities: it puts the obligation to reduce current emissions on developed countries on the basis that they are historically responsible for the current levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC), an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit , held in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , from 3–14 June 1992. The treaty is intended to achieve "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." [1] The Kyoto Protocol establishes legally binding commitments for the reduction of four greenhouse gases ( carbon dioxide , methane , nitrous oxide , sulfur hexafluoride ), and two groups of gases ( hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons ) produced by " Annex I " (industrialized) nations, as well as general commitments for all member countries. As of 2008 , 183 parties have ratified the protocol, [2] which was initially adopted for use on 11 December 1997 in Kyoto , Japan and which entered into force on 16 February 2005. Under Kyoto, industrialized countries agreed to reduce their collective GHG emissions by 5.2% compared to the year 1990. National limitations range from 8% reductions for the European Union and some others to 7% for the United States, 6% for Japan, and 0% for Russia. The treaty permitted GHG emission increases of 8% for Australia and 10% for Iceland. [3]
